Each day for 8th grade ELA class, students will receive points based on their preparedness. If you see your student is losing points in this area, they are not coming to class properly prepared to learn. This is part of their participation grade.
ELA 8-(5 points) Binder, pencil/pen, computer/charger, agenda, and "What do I need today?" items.
On Fridays, students do not need their computer/charger. Instead, they should bring their Independent Reading book.
All students in ELA have an Independent Reading Project due each quarter. 8th grade students are given some time in class to read each week, but the majority of their reading should be completed outside of class. Their project is due prior to the end of each quarter. You can find each quarter's project sheet below. Please encourage your child to read and work on their project as early as possible. This is a significant part of their grade each quarter.

Quarter 1 Independent Reading Projects are due Friday, Oct. 31, 2025
Students are reading The Crucible. They have learned about the Salem Witch Trials, McCarthyism and the Red Scare of the 1950s, and Puritan New England. They have also been learning about conspiracy theories and mass hysteria.
Students are working on their poetry unit. They have learned about poetic devices and are starting to learn how to annotate and analyze poetry. We are also working on recognizing the differences between free verse and blank verse poetry.
Students are working on their culinary unit. They will learn the basics of cooking, explore new foods, prepare exciting dishes, and learn to budget for groceries. We will cover a variety of cooking genres and our units will include: breakfasts (from savory to sweet), soups and other crockpot meals, appetizer and "tailgating" dishes, and full-course dinners. Students will be expected to take what they learn in class and prepare meals at home!
