Water Safety Information

Hinsdale Central School District

In accordance with New York State Education Law § 926

Effective July 1, 2026, New York State Education Law § 926 requires school districts to provide information to families regarding drowning prevention, water safety, and safe and healthy swimming. The law requires this information to be provided at the beginning of the 2026–2027 school year and to new enrollees upon enrollment in subsequent school years.

Drowning Prevention

Always actively supervise children when they are in or near water. Young children should remain within arm's reach of an adult.

Children and inexperienced swimmers should not swim alone. Use designated swimming areas and swim where lifeguards are present whenever possible.

Teach children to swim and help them develop age-appropriate water-survival skills. Remember that swimming ability does not eliminate the risk of drowning.

Use appropriate barriers and safety measures around residential pools and other bodies of water to prevent unsupervised access.

Know how to recognize a drowning emergency and be prepared to call 911 and provide CPR if needed.

Water Safety

Never swim alone. Use the buddy system and keep watch over one another.

Wear a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket when boating or participating in activities where one is appropriate.

Do not use alcohol or drugs while swimming, boating, or supervising children around water.

Pay attention to posted safety rules, water conditions, weather conditions, depth markings, and warnings.

Avoid diving into unfamiliar or shallow water. Enter the water in a safe manner and know the depth before diving.

Keep children away from unsafe or restricted areas around pools, lakes, rivers, and other bodies of water.

Safe and Healthy Swimming

Swim in properly maintained and permitted aquatic facilities whenever possible.

Supervise children even when a lifeguard is present.

Follow facility rules and instructions from lifeguards and aquatic staff.

Do not swim when ill, and follow public health guidance regarding water quality and recreational water illnesses.

Avoid swallowing swimming water and practice good hygiene before and after swimming.

Upon request by a parent or guardian, the District will provide a translation of this water-safety information into one of the twelve most common non-English languages spoken by limited-English proficient individuals in New York State, as identified using the most recent American Community Survey data published by the U.S. Census Bureau.

This page is provided pursuant to New York State Education Law § 926, "Water safety information." The District will provide the required information to parents/guardians at the beginning of the 2026–2027 school year and to parents/guardians of students upon enrollment in subsequent school years. If a student is 18 years of age or older, the information will be provided directly to the student.
