• English 11 Course Overview

This is a regents test year and all materials used in this course have been chosen very carefully to create the best possible scenerio for the students so that they can  be successful when taking the regents exam in June.  With that in mind, this is a course that focuses a great deal of time on the processes of:  notetaking, writing, reading comprehension, and analysis.  The chronology of the class reading selections is as follows:

September/October:  Short Story Unit, Nathaniel Hawthorne.  Final project, Comparison/Contrast Paper: "The Devil and Daniel Webster" and "The Devil and Tom Walker."
October/November:  Play, The Crucible, Arthur Miller.
    November/December:
Play, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, William Shakespeare. Final Project, Memorized and Orally Presented Soliloquy.
January/February: Novel, The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald. Final Project, Critical Lens Comparison Paper.
March - June:  ELA Common Core Review.  This review will culminate in a completed practice common core exam given in its entirety two weeks immediately prior to the common core exam in June  This will allow the students to feel much more secure about the exam because it will be as close to the actual exam as possible both in materials used and in time structure.  This will become their final exam grade for the course.
June: English 11 Common Core Exam.
