• WELCOME!

Hi! My name is Kathleen Simon, and I am a New York State licensed, American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) certified speech-language pathologist and New York State Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities (TSSLD). I was recently presented with the ACE Award by the American-Speech-Language-Hearing Association for going above and beyond the continuing education requirements in my field.

I am excited to start my fifth year at Hinsdale Central School District! It is my mission to provide students with high quality, evidence-based services that result in the speech and language skills necessary to achieve academic and social success.

  • WHAT IS SPEECH-LANGUAGE THERAPY?

Speech-language therapy provides students with the strategies and instructional support they need to improve their understanding and production of speech and language in academic and social settings.

The following areas may be addressed with your child:

Articulation Disorders: difficulties producing sounds to the point that listeners struggle to understand what is being said.

Fluency Disorders: problems such as stuttering, in which the flow of speech is interrupted by abnormal stoppages, partial-word repetitions ("b-b-boy"), or prolonged sounds and syllables (sssssnake).

Resonance or Voice Disorders: problems with the pitch, volume, or quality of the voice that distract listeners from what is being said. These types of disorders may also cause pain or discomfort for a child when speaking.

Receptive Language Disorders: difficulties understanding or processing language.

Cognitive-Communication Disorders: difficulty with communication skills that involve memory, attention, perception, organization, regulation, and problem solving.

Expressive Language Disorders: difficulty putting words together, limited vocabulary, or inability to use language in a socially appropriate way.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC): All forms of communication (other than oral speech) that are used to express thoughts, needs, wants, and ideas.

Speech-language therapy services may be provided in accordance with a child’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or through Hinsdale’s Educationally Related Support Services/Speech Improvement Program.

Services are delivered based on each child’s individual needs and can be provided individually or in small groups, as well as in the therapy room or classroom setting.

  • COMMUNICATION IS KEY:

As parents, you are your child’s primary communication partners. You can support the development of your child’s speech and language skills by keeping me informed of any information that you feel is important to share about your child’s communication skills as well as by reinforcing the work we do in the classroom and therapy room.

Please feel free to call, email, or send a note to school with your child. Our district also uses the Remind App.

I look forward to working together to help your child succeed!
