As the elementary counselor, I work with children individually and in groups to help them address issues such as peer conflicts, academic difficulties, social/emotional problems, and problems in the home. I can also advise parents about where to turn for help within the school and can refer families to outside counseling sources when needed.
If you suspect that your child has special needs, such as a learning disability or attention deficit, the school counselor can be a great place to start. We can help coordinate services, assist the parent in communicating with the teacher and other school personnel, and can provide support for both students and parents during conferences and special education and 504 meetings.
